But there's just one thing he hasn't got, and really, really wants, and that's a-zig-a-zig-ah knighthood. He may be a preening millionaire, he's almost certainly vain, and his grasp of global diplomacy probably makes Donald Trump look like Henry Kissinger.

But that's not why he hasn't got one. Can you imagine that squeaky voice representing the best of Britain? He wasn't that much of a footballer, didn't he invest in some dodgy tax avoidance scheme, and who can forget that woman who said she had an affair with him and ended up pleasuring a pig on Channel 5, snark snark.

And they're all perfectly sound reasons for not inviting someone round to Sunday lunch. But consider the honorary knighthoods we've given to preacher Billy Graham who is still claiming that god hates gays, to Edward Kennedy who left a teenage girl to drown in the car he crashed, to untold Arabic dictators, and to bloody Bono.

If Angelina Jolie can be made a dame just for standing next to William Hague, then there's no reason Becks can't get a gong for playing football and looking pretty.

Except Bruce Forsyth, who for all his charm has contributed nothing much beyond light entertainment, got an OBE too.

And a CBE. And then a knighthood. Perhaps, finally, someone would object to Becks getting his special K on the grounds that he's not known for spreading the financial love.

You can't buy multi-million pound properties all over the world without paying estate agents and property taxes, and you can't furnish them with a quick trip to IKEA.

Today there are simply too many millionaires for me to list who have donated to political parties and - entirely unrelated, of course - later found themselves graced with a gong.

So if John Prescott's wife, who won't step outside in a light breeze in case it musses her hair, can be a Lady, if Rod Stewart's unusual voice can be knighted, if Gary Barlow can hold onto his OBE and his millions, and adulterous Cecil Parkinson can get into the House of Lords while ignoring his love-child, there's no reason that Becks, with his wife, his voice, his tax affairs and his alleged flings, can't do the same.

In the past century just four footballers have been knighted - and one of them didn't even get his sport mentioned in the citation. For all his wealth, looks and gold-plated laptops Becks is still just a pleb - with plebby tastes, a plebby wife, and a plebby wish to be accepted by an Establishment that doesn't want him.

Whether he's done charity work with one eye on that prize or not is irrelevant - he has raised millions of pounds for good causes, when he could easily have written any one of the last four prime ministers a cheque and been confident of ennoblement.

He's been a UNICEF ambassador for 12 years, they say he's ploughed "significant personal funds" into their organisation, and he's carried out more private trips to trouble zones than publicised ones.

You don't spend that much time in refugee camps if you don't really want to be there. David Beckham hasn't got a knighthood because he hasn't gone about it in the right way.

He's done charity work, captained the national team in the national sport, and been named one of the greatest footballers of all time.

He's made millions, somehow kept his marriage going through four children and heaven knows how many women making eyes at him, and provided stable employment to hairdressers, tattoo artists and thousands of shop assistants who sell his pants.

Had he done that, he'd be not only knighted but probably in government. Instead he did what any of us would - he thought if he was good he'd be treated nicely, and was surprised to find that's not how it works.

You would too, in his boots. Becks isn't perfect, but then nor is anyone else who got a knighthood. Craving it in the way he seems to is pathetic, but seeing as he's not halfway as useless, irritating or plain awful as others who've got one there's no logical reason to deny him.

Yet a survey showed more than half of us don't think he should get one. By sheer coincidence, more than half of us are crashing snobs.

If Becks were bright he'd not want to have his handsome chest sullied by a gong corrupted by greed, political machinations and the most grim examples human behaviour.

The worst thing about what these hacked emails show is not his desperate need for acceptance but that, now it's all in the open, he'll never get it.

News opinion.

The match was the first time since the World Cup that Beckham had skippered England and marked a dramatic turnaround for Beckham.

In two years, he had gone from being dropped completely from the England squad to being reinstated though temporarily as England captain.

During the World Cup Qualifier against Belarus in which England won 3—1 in Minsk , Beckham came off the bench in the 87th minute to earn his th cap making him England's third-most- capped player in history, overtaking Bobby Charlton in the process.

On 11 February , Beckham drew level with Bobby Moore 's record of caps for an English outfield player, coming on as a substitute for Stewart Downing in a friendly match against Spain.

After a poor performance from England at the World Cup, Capello remained as manager but was under pressure to revamp the England squad for the imminent UEFA Euro qualification campaign.

He unveiled a new team at the next England match, a home friendly game against Hungary on 11 August , with Beckham still unavailable for selection but aiming for a return to playing in MLS by the following month.

David is a fantastic player but I think we need new players for the future", referring to the new players that play in Beckham's right midfield position, including Theo Walcott and Adam Johnson , adding "This is the future of the team under Fabio Capello or another manager.

Throughout his career, Beckham was considered one of the best and most recognisable players of his generation, as well as one of the greatest free kick takers of all time, [15] [16] largely due to his range of passing in particular his ability to produce accurate long balls to his teammates , vision, crossing ability, and bending free-kicks, which enabled him to create chances for teammates or score goals, and allowed him to excel as a right winger, despite his lack of significant pace and his preference for using his stronger right foot; [] [] [] [] [] [] as such, unlike his Manchester United teammate Ryan Giggs on the opposite wing, he preferred to beat players through his movement and passing, rather than going at opponents directly with the ball.

Although Beckham primarily played on the right flank, he was also used as a central midfielder throughout his career occasionally with Manchester United, but in particular with Real Madrid and A.

Milan , [50] [81] [] [] [] and on rare instances as a deep-lying playmaker , in particular in his later career, in order to compensate for his physical decline with his advancing age.

Ferguson noted that Beckham "practised with a discipline to achieve an accuracy that other players wouldn't care about.

In May , asked about how he wanted to be remembered in his retirement, Beckham said, "I just want people to see me as a hardworking footballer, someone that's passionate about the game, someone that — every time I stepped on the pitch — I've given everything that I have, because that's how I feel.

That's how I look back on it and hope people will see me. Earlier in his career, Beckham's discipline during matches was brought into question on occasion in the media, due to his temper, as well as his tendency to commit rash challenges and pick up unnecessary bookings.

Despite his success, popularity, and playing ability, critical reception of Beckham was often divided among sporting figures and fans throughout his career, in part — as Subhankar Mondal of Goal.

You look at his passing and he makes it look so simple. When he passes the ball, it always seems to go where he wants it to go.

That sounds simple, but believe me, it is not. He has a good long-range shot, but he's not a great player. He doesn't belong to the superior group of players.

There are hundreds of Beckham's playing football all over the world. Apart from that, he's alright. You can go down a list of players from the Premier League or the 70s or 80s, whatever you want to do.

I'll be honest, Beckham probably wouldn't be in the first 1, And yet he has been an anti-diva. He was the most galactic of the galacticos off the pitch, but the greatest of earthlings when he walked on to the field.

However, Beckham's abilities also earned him numerous plaudits from pundits, players, managers, and other footballing figures alike.

That's what we had the chance to see from him when he played in England. He is a player that has had success playing football, not just selling clothes.

Milan teammate Paolo Maldini described Beckham as "a great champion," and as "one of the best players in the world. He sparked debate and polarized opinion.

But underneath the gloss he was, first and foremost, a very good footballer. His highlights are plentiful. But since Beckham's career was strategically constructed to create the ultimate corporate footballer, he has only himself to blame for the cynicism through significant chunks of his career and ho-hum feeling many will have now he has retired.

In my time in the England setup, Paul Gascoigne , Paul Scholes and Rooney just had that little bit more than all the others.

In addition to his footballing abilities, Beckham has also drawn praise in the media for his leadership, with his former England manager Steve McClaren stating: "I've been very fortunate to work with some great players and he [Beckham] was one of them.

He was a great player, he made the very most of his talents and that was through sheer hard work, professionalism, always doing extra on the training field.

He inspired his team-mates through his performances, he was a winner. He was a leader, people followed him. It was announced in late that both would close.

Club Internacional de Futbol Miami — more commonly known as, Inter Miami — is represented by a black crest with neon pink trimmings and herons whose legs clasp to form an "M" for Miami.

On 31 January, the club announced that the FA had approved him to become a director of the club. Therefore, their relationship instantly attracted a great deal of media attention.

The couple were dubbed " Posh and Becks " by the media. On 4 July , they married at Luttrellstown Castle in Ireland.

Beckham's teammate Gary Neville was the best man, [] and the couple's infant son, Brooklyn, was the ring bearer.

Magazine , but newspapers were still able to obtain photographs showing them sitting on golden thrones. In his early Manchester United career, Beckham lived in a four-bedroom house in Worsley that he bought directly from the property developer as a year-old in Known by the nickname "Golden Balls", [] [] Beckham acquired the name from Victoria, who revealed it on national TV in while praising him for rebuilding his reputation after the World Cup.

Beckham suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder OCD , which he says makes him "have everything in a straight line or everything has to be in pairs.

Retrieved 18 June Daily Mirror. Retrieved 27 August Whether he's done charity work with one eye on that prize or not is irrelevant - he has raised millions of pounds for good causes, when he could easily have written any one of the last four prime ministers a cheque and been confident of ennoblement.
